35 National University employees become hematopoietic stem cell donation volunteers

“Thank you for donating your blood sample. Your HLA typing information will be added to the China Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donor Registry. Your kind act will bring hope of rebirth to patients in need of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.” On May 27, Yan Kefeng, a hematopoietic stem cell donation volunteer from GuoDa Company, donated his blood sample and received a certificate of honor from the management center of the China Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donor Registry, looking proud.

That afternoon, the Zhaoyuan Red Cross Society held a hematopoietic stem cell sampling activity at GuoDa Company. Company cadres and employees actively participated in the donation team, storing their blood samples in the China Marrow Bank to add hope to saving the lives of others.

According to the staff of the Zhaoyuan Red Cross Society, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation can treat more than 70 types of malignant blood diseases, malignant tumors, and genetic diseases, including leukemia, and can rekindle the hope of life for patients. Because the probability of a successful hematopoietic stem cell match is very low, the success rate is as difficult as winning a lottery. Therefore, the country has established the China Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donor Registry, also known as the "China Marrow Bank". The more volunteers participate in the donation, the larger the capacity of the bank, and the more opportunities patients have to find suitable donors, and the greater the "vitality". Therefore, donating hematopoietic stem cells is a public welfare undertaking that saves lives and benefits humanity.

“Extend your arm, leave 8 ml of blood sample, and you may bring hope of life to thousands of patients waiting for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.” At the event site, staff from the Zhaoyuan Red Cross Society also brought brochures on hematopoietic stem cell donation knowledge. After carefully reading the China Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donor Volunteer Form and filling out the relevant information in detail, cadres and employees of GuoDa Company rolled up their sleeves and joined the ranks of volunteer donors, loading their blood samples full of love into the China Marrow Bank.

Volunteer Sun Xueping said: “I think participating in this activity today is very meaningful. I used to know very little about hematopoietic stem cells, but through this activity, I learned how difficult it is to find someone with a matching type among the many people in the world. I hope that after my blood sample is stored, it can bring hope of rebirth to patients in need of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.”

On the day of the event, 35 volunteers from GuoDa Company successfully completed blood sample collection and donated their love. Staff from the Zhaoyuan Red Cross Society will take these samples back to the blood center for typing tests and enter the relevant information into the hematopoietic stem cell database for future retrieval of successfully matched donors.
